Startup technology company, Spredfast, has recently received a round of investment capital totalling approximately $12 million to help with expansion. Senator Watson (D-Austin) envisions a massive investment in Austin to create a medical school, complete with a state-of-the-art training hospital, in collaboration with Seton Healthcare. The University of Texas would provide the medical degree and educational components of the plan. While he recognizes the challenge he is up against, he expressed a strong desire to move this past talk and into action.
The Texas Workforce Commission recently released August employment data showing Austin experiencing a net gain of 5,600 jobs from July. The increase resulted in the local unemployment rate dropping to 7.3%. Continue reading

The Marriot company has announced formal plans to build one of their signature Marquis brand hotels in the heart of downtown Austin. The hotel will be just two blocks from the convention center and will provide an estimated 1,000 hotel rooms. Along with the hotel rooms, the Marriot Marquis plans 110,000 square feet of meeting space, a 4,500 square foot fitness center, and space for multiple retail and restaurant venues. Continue reading
While most of the nation faces enormous employment obstacles, Texas stands tall. Statistics released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that Texas leads all states in job creation over the past two years. Office Depot is planning to open a new division in the Austin area, bringing more than 200 jobs to the region. The decision came in part due to contributions being offered to Office Depot through the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). TEF will provide $300,000 in investments to the company to help lure the new division.
