The Marriot company has announced formal plans to build one of their signature Marquis brand hotels in the heart of downtown Austin. The hotel will be just two blocks from the convention center and will provide an estimated 1,000 hotel rooms. Along with the hotel rooms, the Marriot Marquis plans 110,000 square feet of meeting space, a 4,500 square foot fitness center, and space for multiple retail and restaurant venues.
There are only 5 other Marriot Marquis hotels currently in operation. They are located in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Atlanta, and San Diego.
The chain operates their Marquis brand hotels as high-end establishments catering to large groups, providing large central lobbies, bars and restaurants, luxury amenities, and state-of-the-art business centers. Marriot plans these specialty hotels to become centerpieces for the cities in which they operate and the artist renderings for the Austin property are impressive.
The hotel plans to break ground in 2012 and be completed by 2015. During that span, the construction will provide for approximately 550 full time jobs. Once opened, the permanent staffing for the hotel will provide jobs for roughly 725 full time employees.
