Here is our next recommendation in our “Austin Gems” category (see the side bar on the right for a link to past posts). We look for the hidden gems that make living in Austin a truly unique and special experience. We love 6th Street and the greenbelt as much as anyone, but there is more to Austin that the beaten paths.
The weather is perfect for getting outside, but rather than just go play frisbee in the park or run the trails at Zilker, why not try your hand at something different? Plein Air Austin is a group of artists who get together periodically throughout the month to paint on location at various places throughout the Austin area.
The group was founded in 2001 to encourage the pursuit and appreciation of “plein air” painting. Plein Air Austin is composed of serious artists dedicated to the tradition of painting on location in a direct manner. The challenge of capturing a live scene on canvas makes this type of painting even more rewarding. Changing colors and light present new opportunities to find just the right approach to your artwork.
There is a general meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 19th where you can meet the group and find out more about what they do and how they do it. You’ll also hear about their upcoming plans and the locations they are going to visit.
These locations have already been chosen for the upcoming meetings:
• Becker Vineyards, Thursday, April 21st
• French Legation Museum, Saturday, April 23rd
• Annual Retreat at Roddy Tree Ranch, April 29th – 30th.
You don’t have to become a member to join the group on location, so get out there. Challenge yourself while meeting some fascinating and talented artists.
