This is the tenth suggestion in our category called “Austin Gems” (see the side bar on the right for a link to past posts). To be listed in our Gems category, we look for attractions and events that go beyond the typical tourist highlights. Everyone knows about Zilker Park and the numerous trails in and around that part of town. Here’s a suggestion for a new way to explore…especially for those who don’t own two-wheeled transportation of their own.
An unexpectedly warm spell right before Christmas may hinder your holiday spirits, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the surprise weather. With normal crowds far less abundant and sunshine in the forecast, head down to Barton Springs Bike Rentals for a fun and different way to explore the city. Choose from beach cruisers to electric bikes, tandem bikes to mountain bikes, then hit the trails of Zilker or the streets of Austin and see the city in a whole new way. They even offer two different tours so you can see the sights while getting a little exercise at the same time.
This week only, they are offering a special that if you rent one bike, you get a second bike for half price. Or pay for one of the tours and get a second tour for half price. Prices are good until 12.24.2010. Barton Springs Bike Rentals also offers special prices for week long rentals.
So, where will you go once you climb onto your rented bike? Check out these maps for some great ideas of where to ride, courtesy of RunTex. Or, hit the roads and visit South First Street, South Congress, downtown Austin and more. Park the car and get outside while the weather is cooperating.
Don’t be fooled by the time of year. The Texas sun can be hot and you’ll be exerting energy on your ride. Be sure to use sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. And even though we are in a bike-friendly city, please always be alert for cars and pedestrians. Enjoy your ride and send us some pics of the places you visited to firstname.lastname@example.org.
